Local Teenager qualifies for National High School Rodeo Finals

Seventeen year old Teigan Adams of Castle Dale, finished third in barrel racing at the Utah State High School Finals held June 8-11 in Heber City. In her bid to qualify Teigan attended high school rodeos throughout the state of Utah from August of last year to the end of May, she earned enough points to enter the state finals tied for third place in barrel racing.

Teigan competes as a junior attending Utah Virtual Academy. She rodeos as part of the Emery High School Rodeo Club. Emery held their high school rodeo in April in conjunction with the Carbon High School rodeo. While competing at the Carbon High School rodeo which was held in Castle Dale Teigan reset the arena record fast time in barrel racing.

Utah Virtual Academy Congratulates Class of 2011

SALT LAKE CITY, June 9, 2011 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ — On Friday, June 3, the Utah Virtual Academy honored 25 students as the graduating class of 2011.

The traditional graduation ceremony took place at 3 p.m. at the Salt Lake City Main Library. The ceremony featured the senior speech by Nephi Smith of Taylorsville. Upon graduation, Nephi plans to attend the University of Utah. The ceremony also featured a keynote address by Superintendent Larry K. Shumway, Utah State Superintendent of Public Instruction.

“The second graduating class has followed in the same pioneering spirit of the first and demonstrated that they are ready for the future both academically and with the needed technology skills to compete in the workforce of the future,” said Jeff Herr, UTVA head of school. “Most are college bound and I think that speaks well for the quality of the program and the dedication of our students.”

Hartford Writer Wins Fellowship

Alison McLennan is a native of Quincy, Mass., and now based in Odgen, Utah. A graduate of the University of Utah, Alison has worked extensively with non-profit organizations in numerous roles, including curriculum development, grant writing, and crisis intervention. Currently a teacher at the Utah Virtual Academy, Alison has been a recipient of a Utah Arts Council award for her writing. She is at work on a cross-genre novel, Falling For Johnny, set in her childhood home of Massachusetts.

Virtual School year begins

SALT LAKE CITY (ABC 4 News) Two thousand Utah students are in a school without classrooms and their teachers could be across the country. The first public virtual charter school in Utah welcomed back students online this week.

Utah Virtual Academy offers classes to students K-12. Jeff Herr, Head of School for the academy says it’s accredited, and utilizes only certified teachers. It is tuition free, public education. All materials, including workbooks, text books, and instructional materials are delivered to the student’s home.
